Kidd Mine - supported by Lafarge Canada - wins Safety Award from CIM

MAY 26, 2020 - TIMMINS, ON: The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) is recognizing industry contributions with its 2020 Celebration of Excellence. Though the annual convention and celebration banquet had to be cancelled this year due to COVID-19, the CIM has gone ahead and announced those being recognized for their contributions in various fields in the mining industry.

Two Northern Ontario mines were recognized with John T. Ryan Trophies, which acknowledge the mines with the lowest reportable injury frequencies during the previous year, including Glencore’s Kidd Mine in Timmins, Ont. Lafarge is proud to be a part of this operation and contribute to the success that this mine continues to achieve in terms of safety performance, year in and year out.

Lafarge has operated the paste plant since 2004. Over time the operational capacity has expanded resulting in increased reliability, decreased cost per tonne, and greater throughput. Lafarge’s backfill support services including processing and delivery of sand and tailings resulted in significant cost savings for the mine. Lafarge also provided a custom designed paste - TerraFlow ? 90.  Annually, we produce approximately 1.2M T of paste backfill which flows down surface boreholes up to 9,500 ft. (2895m) deep. Currently the total volume of paste supplied to Glencore is approximately 19.5M tonnes.

Initially, Lafarge provided paste backfill plant design, setup, support and operation to allow the mine to focus on its energy on ore extraction. Lafarge also contributed to reducing the mine’s environmental footprint by processing and recycling mine tailings into the paste. Along with the paste plant that Lafarge manages for Glencore, we also own and operate a shotcrete / concrete plant that supplies product to the mine directly down a borehole, thus eliminating any delivery costs to the mine.

We congratulate Glencore on this award, and are very pleased to have assisted in this achievement.
